How To Play HD YouTube Videos On Android for 3G

Sometimes limitations are good. Digitally speaking, if a carrier limits download speeds to prevent excess costs, we’re grateful. But if a hardware or software vendor imposes limits we cannot change, this can be of extreme annoyance.

Since our devices are becoming more and more advanced, watching web videos on them is becoming more commonplace; a practice which also owes a debt of gratitude to the increased and improved quality of bandwidth. Having said that, streaming media still seems like a bit of a task on mobile, and it doesn’t yet seem the creators of the apps have gotten things right.

Television catch-up apps are regularly given negative feedback on the App Store and Android Market Google Play, because they are so unreliable, and seem to really lag behind some of the real cutting-edge apps available to us.

YouTube 3G Android

The YouTube app is probably the weakest of them all, and even on Google’s own Android, it’s not the heightened experience you’d perhaps expect from a Google app on a Google platform. Luckily, those looking for an improved YouTube app need look no further than XDA Forum member theos0o, who has added a nifty little fix to the official YouTube app which allows users to play 720p streams on devices of any resolution, and over any network.

Of course, running a 720p stream on a WVGA phone doesn’t sound like the greatest of ideas, however, some early adopters of the fix have stated that they can still notice solid quality improvements over the “HQ” stream, thanks to higher sampling.

There are two main builds. 2.4.4 is intended for those running older Android devices (i.e. 2.x to 3.1), while build 3.5.5 has been created for those using Android 3.2 upwards.

In addition, for those partial to visible changes, a black version mod has been provided due to popular demand.

In order to get started, it’s recommended you have a rooted device. Then simply remove /system/app/YouTube.apk and if YouTube is still there, go into its app info tab and hit “RemoveInstalled Updates” and then “Force Stop”.

After that, install the .apk specific to your device via the XDA thread, and be sure to leave your comments and bug discoveries in that thread.

Google strengthen Mobile Commerce Wallet Solution

In recent days, Internet search giant Google has been doing some dramatic searching of its own. In response to widespread reports and criticisms that the company’s mobile wallet commerce platform is vulnerable to potentially criminal hack attacks, Google has been searching for viable solutions to remedy the concern and calm anxious customers.

Google predictions.

We are currently working on an automated fix as well that will be available soon,” Google said at the time. “We also advise all Wallet users to set up a screen lock as an additional layer of protection for their phone.

A Temporary Solution in Place

In the aftermath of understandable jitters resulting from the confirmed vulnerability of Google’s mobile commerce platform, Google has rolled out a temporary solution to the problem.

“To address an issue that could have allowed unauthorized use of an existing prepaid card balance if someone recovered a lost phone without a screen lock,” Vice President of Google Wallet and Payments Osama Bedier writes, “tonight we temporarily disabled provisioning of prepaid cards. We took this step as a precaution until we issue a permanent fix soon.

Google is going the extra mile this week to reiterate just how “safe” the mobile wallet solution is, particularly when compared to traditional plastic credit cards.

“Over the last few days we’ve received questions and concerns about issues related to the security of Google Wallet,” the company announced on its blog. “People are asking if Google Wallet is safe enough for mobile phone payments. The simple answer to this question is yes. In fact, Google Wallet offers advantages over the plastic cards and folded wallets in use today.

The Learning Curve is Still Alive

On Monday, independent business analyst Mike Randazzo told Daily Deal Media that Google’s prompt response to the concern was a masterstroke of quality customer service and a clear indication of just how seriously the company takes mobile payment solutions.

I don’t think Google made any sloppy mistakes here,” Randazzo says. “This is a whole new world when it comes to NFC based technologies and mobile payment solutions. The bugs haven’t all been worked out and the learning curve is still pretty substantial industry-wide.

Having only been introduced to consumers last year, Google’s Near Field Communications-based Google Wallet program allows consumers to make purchases through the simple act of tapping their Android smartphone on any one of the 300,000 MasterCard PayPass-enabled merchant terminals already deployed.

New technologies can be messy,” Randazzo goes on to say, “but I think Google handled this situation well and customers shouldn’t fear using the platform. It exists for your security and convenience. And notwithstanding a few minor and now resolved glitches, I think Google Wallet is still meeting its stated objectives.

benefits of the IPO for Facebook its finally happening

After being in the pipeline for quite some time, Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook has taken the long anticipated plunge and filed to go public with the company’s eagerly anticipated initial public offering (IPO).

The technology world has been waiting patiently for what has been the most anticipated IPO since Google in 2004, with Facebook looking to raise approximately $5 billion. It remains to be seen whether or not how the capital will be raised, but if the world’s largest social network succeeds, then it would value the company at approximately $100 billion, or 26th in the world, just behind the golden arches of McDonald’s.

Facebook is eight years old, and for the first time laid out details of their finances with the company bringing in approximately $4.3 billion of revenue last year. With 850 million registered and active members, half of the United Kingdom’s population are registered users of the network and it is clear that it is the user-base which provides the value.

The underwriting of the deal will handled primarily by leading investment bank Morgan Stanley, with additional responsibilities being given to Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan. With shares expected to be traded as early as May 2012, the question I’m sure people are asking themselves is, is Facebook really worth $100 billion? Even at the lowest end of the expected valuation, it would value the social network at more than the Disney Corporation.

Facebook Like logo

Research firm eMarketer estimate that Facebook’s ad revenue will rise to $7 billion by 2013 after they have already overtaken Yahoo! in terms of ad revenue, which may seem like a lot of income purely from ads alone, but when compared with Disney’s revenues of $40 billion and Google’s $37.9 billion, it pales into insignificance.

One of the many benefits of the IPO for Facebook will be the immediate cash generation, allowing the company to pay off early investors and possibly invest in acquiring smaller companies to grow their product portfolio. Google used the cash that their initial public offering generated to purchase companies like YouTube and DoubleClick which dramatically increased their business.

All eyes will be eagerly fixed on developments with long time Facebook fans waiting to see just what kind of numbers Mark Zuckerberg’s company can generate.

New Iphone 5 to be released in June

Apple decided, that in 2011, it would break the regular launch pattern for the iPhone and deviate from the traditional June unveiling. The company took to the stage in October instead during the “Let’s talk iPhone” event to announce the details and release date for the current iPhone 4S. Even though the 4S has only been with us for just over three months, people are starting to speculate and anticipate when we will see the announcement of the iPhone 5. The good news for some is that we may not need to wait a full twelve months as it looks as though the next generation iPhone will be put back onto the traditional schedule and will be announced in June of this year during the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. Speculation comes from Daiwa Securities who believe that the company will revert back to the WWDC; unveiling for the sixth generation iPhone. The iPhone 3G, 3GS and the iPhone 4 were all unveiled during a WWDC keynote. Daiwa also claim that the new iPhone 5 will make use of glass to glass touch panel technology which will likely be supplied by TPK Holding and Wintek, although this obviously has not been confirmed. The October launch of the iPhone 4S was surprising to some, but the possibility of Apple going back to a June launch date does not come as a shock if it is true. The exact dates for the Worldwide Developer Conference this year are yet to be announced by Apple but a leaked calendar from the Moscone Center points to a date between June 10 and June 15 which has a corporate meeting scheduled in. The “Corporate Meeting” placeholder is generally what the company has used in the past to identify a WWDC event, so the chances are high that the calendar entry could hold merit. If Apple does launch the sixth generation iPhone in June, I can certainly see a number of consumers being rather unhappy considering it would only have been eight months since the last release, taking away the opportunity away from them from upgrading to a newer device. I know from a personal point of view that I like the releases to be in twelve month intervals for that reason, but, the October 2011 launch forced me to buy a SIM-free iPhone 4S. (via MacRumors)
